Brothers

IMG_2926

Bennett,

You have captured not only our hearts, but your brother’s heart as well. I know there will be fights, wrestling matches, competition, sports, girls, and hopefully covering for each other when you inevitably get in trouble. But for right now, I will soak in these simple moments of Bud taking in every little inch of you. There is something pretty magical about a having a big brother, and you my Bennett have the greatest big brother in Bud. He will look after you, protect you, make you laugh, and maybe even buy you beer one day. Treasure him as much as he is treasuring you.

Love, Mama

Trends

So there are not a lot of trends I buy into. I have the oldest iPhone and I only broke down and got it last year as my deployment present. I don’t have a radio in my car so I would have no clue what music is cool now although I hear Miley Cyrus is trying to make a come back…. maybe everyone should break their car radio like mine. I’ve been wearing the same jeans for 3 years and I don’t know what the brand is, Cheap Monday I think? I don’t get what the big deal about Jen Hatmaker is. And I’ll never wear feathers in my hair…. is that still cool?

But there is one trend that I buy into every single year hook, line, and sinker. PUMPKIN EVERYTHING. We already know my problem with candy corn pumpkins.

But I made my own pumpkin syrup the other day so that I wouldn’t spend money on Pumpkin Spice Lattes and sweet. Lord. mamajamma. So I’m sharing with you my mojo. It was easy to make and every morning I mix it with the cream in my coffee and it’s like an explosion on Pinterest and Fall in my mouth.

You’re welcome,

Your pumpkin obsessed out of touch friend.

IMG_2928

Ingredients:

1.5 cups water
1.5 cups sugar
1 tsp. cinnamon
2 tsp. pumpkin pie spice
1 cup pureed pumpkin

Heat water and sugar in a pot until sugar is dissolved, don’t boil. Add spices and pumpkin and stir. Cook for 5 minutes, don’t let it boil. Let it cool and put it in a cute mason car or whatever container you’d wish.  Just add it to Half & Half in your coffee or if you have a fancy espresso machine you can make your own lattes. I also have it on good authority it goes great over a pound cake… just sayin’. There ya have it!

1-3 Week Old Bennett Rippy

IMG_6701

Stats at 2 week check up:

Weight: 8 lb 14 oz…. woot! Way to go booboo juice!

Length: 20 3/4 inches

Reflux: yup.

Baby acne: yup.

Cuteness level: In the 100th percentile

For the most part, Bennett is eating on a great 3 hour schedule. I have to spend about 30 minutes keeping him upright and burping him after he eats otherwise it ends in a 2 hour long screamfest which really he’s just yelling, “YOUR BREASTMILK IS POISON MOM!”

He has gorgeous blue eyes, his mama’s nose, and everyone thinks he looks like my dad. Did I mention Bennett is my maiden name? So its kind of sweet that he’s looking like a Bennett since Bud is really looking exactly like Sam. And while we are talking about names, Bennett = my maiden name and Rippy = my maternal great-grandmother’s maiden name. Metzler = my baby daddy. And just like that we have Bennett Rippy Metzler.

We are finding our groove as a family of 4 and I forgot how sweet the first month is full of snuggles and baby smells. Bud is taking to being a big brother like a champ and my heart is so full. I’m beyond grateful to have two healthy boys, an amazing husband, and a crazy-ass dog that it’s hard to find gloom around here despite the rainy season setting in.

First bath!

This quilt was in Sam’s room when we was growing up and little Bennett’s monthly pictures will feature this gem. Bud’s monthly pictures are so sweet to me so it’ll be fun to watch Bennett grow month to month on this quilt.

Things I’ve learned from the first week – Real Talk

1. Sometimes I don’t have enough eyes or hands or I’m stuck on the couch breastfeeding and Bud gets into things he shouldn’t. I can’t promise you I didn’t find him eating a cheese stick out of the trash. I also can’t promise you he didn’t run inside the house with dogpoop all over his shoes screaming, “Mama! Dogpoop! Hooray!” and preceded to try and wipe it off with my nice handtowels.

2. Nursing boobs yall. I feel like Tammy Taylor mixed with an ale girl…. Friday Night Lights: St. Paulie’s Edition.

3. Insatiable nursing hunger has set in. I remember it with Bud but man, I literally could eat the entire house. This does not bode well for post-partum weight loss.

4. I’ve been pooped on…. by both boys. Also side note: going from changing Bennett’s diaper to changing Bud’s diaper I realize more than ever I need to potty train Bud. I feel like I’m changing a pre-teen’s diaper. Gross.

5. I’ve realized there’s no formula. You just have to make it work. I’m trying to find “my way” and even if it doesn’t end up in some parenting book one day, I think my kids will end up ok…. even if it means every now and then they eat out of the trash and have a mom who bears cleavage even in a turtleneck.

Have an amazing weekend yall and Sam starts paternity leave after today so YAAAYYYY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Things I’ve learned from the first week

My heart literally feels like it could burst open every time I see my two boys together. Bud is totally smitten with Bennett and always wants to hold him, “where’s baby brodder?”, and gives him little hugs. Every time Bennett Rippy is crying, Bud runs over and just pats him on the legs and says, “Otay baby brodder. Otay.” I mean……. I die. Roy on the other hand, could care less.

IMG_6649 IMG_6656 IMG_2864 IMG_2858 IMG_6663

Things really do just come back to you. Nursing, the functioning off of little sleep, and multitasking just come naturally the second time. Also, the recovery hasn’t been nearly as bad! Maybe my body just knew I couldn’t afford to lay on the couch for a week because I have a toddler who wants to wrestle.

Just like his big brother, chocolate kills Bennett’s stomach. It was the same with Bud, any time I ate it, he’s scream for hours and it messed with his reflux so badly. So…. that’s fun. More Sprees for me!

While we are still schedule folks, I’m a bit more relaxed with this little guy. I’ve gotten a lot of snuggles from him and taking naps on the couch which has been so priceless. Little guy is eating every 2.5-3 hours and I can handle that!

The challenges have been obvious like sleep and finding time for Sam. I miss him. But another challenge has been trying to think of fun activities for Bud to do while I’m nursing. It takes about 40 minutes each time so we made flubber, we make pillow forts, and we kick a ball back and forth. Any other suggestions? But seriously, the kid is just amazing me by how awesome he is. I am still able to play with him at the park (thank you Moby Wrap) and so far he’s happy.

IMG_2878 IMG_2879

This week is the first week on my own without Mama. Yall- the woman was a saint. Sam had to go straight back to work after Bennett Rippy was born because he had 3 big trials happening last week and this week so Mama and I held down the fort. I didn’t do any laundry, she cooked, she cleaned, she played with Bud, then she snuggled with Bennett Rippy while I played with Bud, and she argued with the car mechanics about fixing my car for the 34,575,678th time. I mean, I literally couldn’t have survived this first week without her. I’m eternally grateful. Sam will get to take paternity leave next week so I’m stoked about having our little family together.

IMG_6671 IMG_6668

All in all- I am floating on cloud 9 with this two baby thing. I know we’ll have our IbarelymadeitthroughtodayandIneedtoshower days but this past week the Lord has had mercy and I’m so happy.

Bennett Rippy’s Birth Story

Friday, August 30th we went in at 2pm for our 41 week midwife appointment. We couldn’t believe we were at our 41 week appointment and were praying for some progress. She told me I was only 2cm and 30% effaced so our boy probably wouldn’t show his face until the following week. She decided to sweep my membranes again (4 times people….help me Rhonda) and we went on our way with a little bit of disappointment but mostly relief that the babe looked healthy and they wouldn’t induce.

Two hours later I started feeling really uncomfortable and crampy. I assumed it was from the sweeping so we went about our day. By 5pm I was cramping but they felt different than normal cramps but I wouldn’t admit it to anyone. I didn’t want to jinx it. Mom and I took Bud over to my friend Mel’s house to swing and play with her kiddos and while she and I were chatting, she saw me breathing funny and pacing her yard. She looked at me and laughed and all I could say was, “Yeah I know, but don’t scare him away!” At 6pm I knew I was in labor so I walked around the block, said a bunch of prayers and came back inside to tell Mom to go get her bag from the hotel because she’d probably be spending the night and looked at Sam with a big smile and said, “I think this is finally it babe.”

So the only rational thing to do was to make a casserole for supper, and coconut chocolate bars with Mama. Naturally.

IMG_6615

We all enjoyed a great family meal, and in between bites and hollering at Bud to stay in his seat I would breathe through the contractions. Sam and I took Bud upstairs and did our last storytime as a family of 3 and I squeezed him extra tight.

As soon as we got downstairs I finally let myself experience labor (I wanted to keep it together so Bud wouldn’t get scared or suspect anything). With Bud I had an 18 hour labor so I was expecting a more gradual incline in discomfort but…. not so much. The contractions were pretty intense, pretty quickly. I listened to music, got in the bath, and tried to rest/labor in the bed. Something I wasn’t expecting during labor was that I was really sentimental about my time with Bud one-on-one coming to an end. I ended up sneaking into his room and just watching him sleep until I was afraid I was going to break his guardrail from squeezing so hard during a contraction. But each contraction was getting stronger and stronger. I remember trying to picture them as waves and would just pretend I was floating on each one like I used to as a child.

Then I wanted to punch those waves in the throat.

The contractions were getting hard to walk or talk through so by midnight I looked at Sam and told him we needed to go to the hospital ASAP. We grabbed my bag and kissed my mom goodbye and headed out the door. We had to park what seemed FOREVER away and labor and delivery seemed like the longest.walk.ever. from the entrance. This is when I think I just looked like a plain ole crazy person. The only thing my body wanted to do during contractions was sing. Yall- please picture me in active labor holding onto Sam while singing Come Thou Fount….I’ll let you marinate on that for a bit.

We finally got to triage aka My Living Hell at 12:45a. They said I was 5cm dilated and fully effaced. We told them to start filling up the tub because I could already tell the bed wasn’t going to be comfortable for me at all but we were only planning on laboring in the tub, we weren’t planning on a water birth. We were in triage forever and I was crawling out of my skin being hooked up to monitors and not being able to move about freely BUT I was still singing so at least I was providing comic relief. Then this crazy (ok, crazier) lady checked in screaming, “OH MY GOD! OH MY GOD! NOOOO!” to which Sam started laughing and said, “At least you’re not like that.” and I tried to laugh but then an intense contraction hit and I wanted to focus on the beauty of bringing my son into the world so I ended up plugging up my ears and kept singing. It was like a mockumentary of A Baby Story in triage that night.

photo-1

Finally they came and got me and sweet Lord, as soon as I got in that tub it was the greatest relief. After being on that tiny bed in triage with monitors on, I was in heaven. I looked at Sam and told him how much better I felt and even told him I thought the contractions were getting farther apart. Then a major one hit and all I could say was, “Why did I say that?! Why did I say that?!” and we both tried to laugh…… tried.

Here’s where it gets fun. This poor nurse came in to ask all those annoying questions (which I was trying so desperately to answer in between contractions which were about 90 seconds apart at this point) and after a big one, I knew I felt him really start to move down. That’s the beauty in natural childbirth, I felt so in tune with Bennett the whole time and how God had designed everything so perfectly so Bennett could make his way into this world. I kept thinking, Our Creator is not a careless mechanic. Each contraction brings him a little closer to being a part of our family. The last hour of labor things got pretty crystal clear and beautifully intense. The midwife came in to check on us and said she’d leave us alone and it looked like we knew what we were doing and she’d be back later to check on us.

I knew it was going to happen soon, I knew my body. I prayed out loud that my water would break but that it wouldn’t be painful (it was super painful when it happened with Bud) and I felt such a peace wash over me that He heard me and after the next contraction I felt a gentle rush of water and Sam called out to the nurse that my water broke and things were going to get real after that. They didn’t really believe me. That was at 2:15ish.

Sam and I were in the room alone and I was starting to make some crazy noises and knew it was game time. I started wanting to push so I looked at Sam and told him, “You better get them in here I’m about to push!” He couldn’t quite believe it but when I started making pushing noises he made his way towards the door. This is when I got the bright idea to stand up and try and get out of the tub. Poor Sam wanted to grab the midwife but his crazy wife was irrationally trying to get out of the tub while pushing because she hadn’t imagined a water birth again so he helped me out while I leaned against the side of the tub. He ran out of the room and told them to grab the midwife.

They couldn’t find her. She was in the bathroom.

Yall- I wish I could just make a video of what happened next because it still cracks me up but at the same time, makes me take wonder at the beauty of childbirth. I was in full pushing mode and Sam and I were still alone in the room. I reached down to find that I had already pushed Bennett’s head out so I yelled at Sam, “BABE! I have his head! Get the midwife!!” So Sam runs out yelling, “YALL! WE HAVE A HEAD IN HERE!” So they all finally run in…. except for the midwife. This poor brand new OBGYN resident comes in to try and help and just stares at me perched on the edge of the tub basically catching our baby and she ** no joke**  starts slowly backing out of the room as if she was hoping we didn’t see her. Poor girl, I officially may have scared her away from the profession…. and childbirth in general. Then luckily, Barb the midwife runs in and just in time, catches Bennett. His cord was lightly wrapped around his neck (just like Bud) but she was awesome and kept telling me to slowly push so that I wouldn’t tear and she could get the cord straight. Within a few pushes our Bennett Rippy had made his way into the world with just as much glory and craziness as his brother. Sam said I yelled, “I think he’s here!” and whipped around to hold my babe. So much love and honestly, we were so shocked that it happened so quickly!

He latched on immediately and nursed so well. His cord finished pulsating and the man of my dreams cut it. They let us have some time with him and said he was perfectly healthy. We made our way to the bed and just stared at each other. We were both shocked that he was finally here and kept saying, “Did we seriously just almost deliver our own baby?”

IMG_2889

His birth story is so beautiful and I am so honored to be his mama. To go through something so intense like that is quite marvelous really. I felt so close to God, so close to my husband, and so close to Bennett the entire time. I’m beyond blessed.

Bennett Rippy Metzler, 7lb 11oz, 19.5 inches long totally captured our hearts and came into this world with gusto at 2:29am. May you always joyfully surprise us little one.

Thoughts on being “late”

I just laughed at that title because I am so desperately trying to not use “late” or “overdue” anymore but it’s clearly not working. Ok, so technically I’m 6 days past my due date. And I wish I could tell you I was handling it like a champion of peace every second but I’m not. Some seconds, yes…. but not every second. Bud came 9 days after my “due date” so I shouldn’t be surprised. I make it pretty comfy in there apparently. Here is my stream of thoughts this week:

IMG_2826

– I’m trying to reframe my thinking that each day that goes by without 2.0 baby is one more day that I get to spend with Bud one-on-one.

– I’d love to bring this babe into the world naturally and peacefully just like Bud and that will obviously be easier if he’s not the size of Thor and I don’t have to deal with medical induction. Luckily, they haven’t nailed me down for a date yet (I’m annoyingly persistent about my rights). I have my stress test tomorrow morning and my 41 week appointment Friday morning so we will see what the midwives say. If necessary, I’m going to fight for 42 weeks but obviously praying he comes before then.

– I’m waddling. That is all.

– I’m still trying to look nice each day because I’m thinking that will make me feel more normal instead of what is actually happening which is strangers visibly slowing their cars down and pointing as I walk through the neighborhood and doing the head tilt, “Oh my, when are you due?!” in the grocery store.

– I realized I needed a major heart check. I won’t lie, once his “due date” came I went a little control freak. I started trying every natural induction method in the book. I think those methods can be super helpful in aiding the baby out, but my heart was trying to manipulate my body and take control and FORCE the baby out. So, I realized I went a little crazy and have given myself a break from natural induction techniques for a day or two to get my heart right. Yall- it got ugly the other day (castor oil, pumping, chasing Sam around like Miley Cyrus trying to get some action) so I’m getting my heart in the right place about the fact that God knows this baby’s birthday and I need to chill.

– My friend Stacy who is my distant doula/midwife through both Bud and this little guy sent me an email late last night (after dealing with my craziness so gracefully and patiently) and honestly, it was EXACTLY what I needed to read and it sent me into a tornado of tears and M&Ms. First of all, she knows me so well and gave me wonderful information about my body, inductions, and the averages of due dates. But then she told me a story about her little girl.

At some point, I must have shared something about Ezra’s own timing.  We were walking side by side and my little girl said, “Mama, you always say I was born early.  But I wasn’t.  I was born when God told me to be born.”.  After saying for many years that Ezra was almost 3 weeks early, I realized how often she had heard her birth story framed in that way, or some story about how she only weighed 5 pounds b/c she was ‘early’.  My heart skipped a beat, my eyes flooded with tears, and my pregnant self flopped to my knees and held Ezra’s tiny hands.  I said something like, “You are right, babe.  You were born at just the right time.  Thank you for hearing God’s words and agreeing with God.”.  Ever since I have always said that Ezra was born at just the right time, the time when she was supposed to be born.  I trusted her even then as a wee babe inside me and yeah, she is easy to trust 8 years later!  It’s incredible how that child hears from God.  But that is another sack of stories….

I encourage you to take a risk and Trust this.  Who knows what you will learn now and in the future?  It is a wonderful ride to hear our children speak of their relationships with God long before we were even putting them in cute church clothes.  Amazing.  What an opportunity to take a leap of faith!

So there ya go, I’m trusting. I’m trying to remove “Oh well Bud was 9 days late so this one might be too” from my vocabulary because God knows exactly when my boy will come into the world and it’ll be awesome. Prayers for my heart and for my labor/delivery are welcomed and cherished! I’ll keep you posted!

In the meantime…

Well since I’m past my due date and the little guy is still cooking, I’m trying to really enjoy time with our friends, my guys, AND my MAMA IS HERE!! So we’ve been playing a lot, exploring, and just trying to be “normal”. (aka, I need to stop bouncing on this stupid ball)

I can’t tell you how fun it is having Mama here. My family is so important to me so to be so far away is hard on my heart sometimes so it is such sweetness when we get to be together.

We had a cookout with some of our best buds the Williams. LJ and Sam actually went to high school together and are stationed here together which has been SUCH a blessing. Chye is pregnant too so it’s been fun to go through this together.

IMG_2772 IMG_2774

I keep telling LJ he should probably start working out more since he’s looking kind of puny.

IMG_2775

Wednesday nights in the next town over, there is a farmers market and music on the grass that we go to. So this week Mama joined us and we had the greatest time getting fresh produce, having a picnic, and listening to the Navy brass band.

40 week belly there folks…. in all its glory.

IMG_2781

Bud has aged like 5 years in 2 weeks. He plays so well and is really using his imagination. He is my favorite playmate, I can’t get enough of him. In this picture he told me he was drawing me “a rocketship!”

IMG_2765

I’m loving this time but man, I’m ready to get this show on the road with 2.0. It’s like waiting to run a marathon but not knowing when you get to run it. So lets get this party started!

I’m not a martyr, I’m a Mama.

IMG_2278 Addendum: Thanks to some wise words from a reader, I need to clarify.  This is not meant to be a blanket statement towards all parents. I firmly believe that parents dealing with serious issues like disabilities need whatever platform they can get. My main point is that we need to choose our words on social media carefully because our negativity can easily bleed onto our children. I’m not trying to sound calloused, please know that. This is a hard gig and I’m convinced there are days when my son is trying to take me down. But we can’t continue to tell our closest 1500 friends on Facebook that our kid is the worst because while this gig is hard, we are capable of handling it with God’s help. My mama told me that if we can serve without complaining while encouraging others- that’s where the good stuff is.  That’s how the Kingdom is built.

I’m not going to make any friends with this post, in fact, I might lose some. But it’s been stirring around in my brain for awhile. In fact, it stirs around every time I see a “cryfest/I’m a martyr mom” article floating around on Facebook.

Don’t get me wrong, I think that parents need a safe place to vent about some of our struggles, but do I think that we need it more than anyone else? I just don’t know.

Here’s the thing, we aren’t martyrs.

There I said it, commence angry comments NOW. But I think it’s true. We are strong women and men who (most) of us have chosen this path of parenthood. We are badass and strong. We aren’t martyrs, we don’t need pity.

We can carry a toddler on one hip and 8 grocery bags in the other hand just so we don’t have to make another trip to the car.

We can hear “I HATE YOU!” and still have love in our hearts…. and not punch the person that said it in the throat like I might do if someone said that to me on the street.

We can make supper, clean a house, have the dog fed, and master a damn good ponytail all in 30 minutes.

But we’re not martyrs. This is what we do as parents. If we keep saying “Ugh I’m SO busy” or “This is SO hard” or “I’m SO exhausted” all over Facebook or Twitter, then what are we saying about our craft? We can handle this parents, we can handle the tantrums, the thrown food, the smeared ketchup on the sofa. But if we keep putting ourselves up on a martyr stand in the middle of the town then someone (probably my kid) will knock us off of it with a toy car.

Lets enjoy this crazy ride and put on our big girl/boy boots because we GET to do this. Blessing… not a burden.

Bud’s Sayings

*Pregnancy brain has hit me hard this time around and I had no idea I had published this until my mother started quoting Bud and when I asked her how she knew he said that, she said, “Um, your blog?” Sooooo SORRY for the random list of Bud sayings, I had no idea I published it! I have been keeping a list for awhile now so I can remember his little sayings and quirks. Since this is his digital baby book, here are the translations:

IMG_2771

otay = Okay

….. now = he follows everything with “now”. “milk now?” “nap now?”

idontwanttoo = I don’t want to (all.the.time.)

iwuzyou = I love you

scuzeeee = Excuse me

toopiddog = Stupid dog (oops)

you otay? = You okay? This usually happens after I fall or growl about something that I can’t get to work and he runs up and says, “You otay Mama?”

tank you mama= Thank you Mama

wee-o trucks or wee-o cars – firetrucks or police cars

He can’t walk by music without dancing and when we are in the car he’ll say, “Utick on? Utick on?” – Music on!

He loves to wrestle, throw the ball for, or pat Roy saying “i wuz you”

ready dog? = yeah, he actually says that one right

Each morning I ask, “Bud, what do you want for breakfast?” and he screams, “PANCAKES!”

I love that he still talks to himself in the mornings while he wakes up.

He took to a big boy bed awesomely! “boy bed?” he keeps saying. But the first nap I put him in there he was all over the place. I looked at him on the monitor and he was counting the rocketships on his sheets and pulling the curtains back saying , “pretty day! pretty day!” which I guess I say when I open the curtains in the morning?

“Whuuh happened?!” = What happened?

“what IS dis?” = What is this?

“come on mama! come on dada!”

“WESSLE DADA! WESSLE!” = WRESTLE DADA!

“hike?”=  hide and he buries himself in pillows

He has started yelling “HEY PEOPLE!” every time we pass a group of people…. I can barely keep it together.
