It’s no secret that Sam and I are both blessed with amazing parents and Bud is blessed with such loving grandparents. When I became a mama, I think all the sacrifices and all the joy became so clear in my own life but they also became clear in retrospect for our own parents. I was beyond grateful for the way I was brought up. I’ve been praying a lot about the style of discipline that Bud needs from me and I read two incredible quotes from the Loving the Little Years book that I mentioned earlier in the week.

“Your authority should always be geared toward guiding with an eye toward releasing. Authority into freedom” 

“As my parents always said, the garden was full of trees to eat from, and only one was a ‘no touch’. Structure and freedom combined together make happy children. Too much of either is very destructive.”

I have found myself writing thank you notes in my head to my parents for the way they put healthy boundaries on me but also embraced that I was in God’s hands and gave me so much freedom. Healthy freedom. Thank you Dad for putting me on a motorcycle when I was 5, because though it didn’t end well, the lesson you instilled in my heart of not having fear in my life has lasted through the sky diving, the bungee jumping, and the child-laboring.  And I jumped right back on that damn thing afterwards. Thank you Mama for allowing me to go to Europe without yall in college, and allowing me to go to parties I knew I had no business being at and holding up your end of the deal that I could call in the middle of the night if I needed a ride because I shouldn’t be driving and I wouldn’t receive a lecture. I only had to do it once and I had no reason to rebel afterwards because you showed me you trusted me.
