Happy Heart

IMG_5823

“A happy heart makes the face cheerful….” Proverbs 15:13

So I’ve been reading 1000 Gifts with a group of women at my house every Friday and I’ve read it before and could read it a million times. My book is weathered, filled with underlined revelations, humbled teardrops, and I’m sure some forehead marks where I’ve slammed my head down into the pages.

The book is about pursuing thankfulness in every season and seeing the world through eyes of humbled gratitude and “eucharisteo“.

I’ll jump right to the point. I’ve been struggling with a thankful and cheerful heart. I’ve been… well, just struggling. I could blame it on the fact that I’m solar-powered and live in a place where the sun doesn’t really shine except in the summers but the cold hard truth is, it shouldn’t matter. I should be joyful, grateful, and shaking my head in disbelief of my blessings all the time.

So, the past 2 weeks I’ve been going through a major heart change. I’ve been experiencing joy like never before, even when I have to chase it down with all of my strength.

It was a chilly day on Saturday but we bundled up and went in search of beauty. I found it. I didn’t find it in a breathtaking view of the mountains but I found it in the laugh of my boy throwing rocks, the sound of geese over my head, watching my love hold the hand of his boy, and the sound of gravel crunching under my boots. I found it and I am trying to get up each morning with eyes to search for it even in the cloudiest or darkest of days.

This week

Here is this week’s recap in photos. I’m laying on the couch spooning with my dog because well…. that’s how I live it up on a Thursday night yall. Happy Friday yall!

We went to a fun Moms Club party in our neighborhood and Bud made a crown and preceded to wear it around the rest of the day. It was pretty hilarious despite how unamused he looks here.

IMG_1637

And oh yeah, he got to eat a cupcake later.

IMG_1647

And this is one of those little things that makes my heart melt, baby chucks. Every time he wears these he just looks like such a little dude running around.

IMG_1641

My son loves bathtime. Bud is so happy that he runs around yelling “BATH BATH” and “NAKEY NAKEY” while the tub fills up. I love it.

I mean…… come on.

This is Bud and his betrothed Adalynn while her daddy reads to them. Too cute.

15 Weeks

So, I really try to be grateful for every minute of this pregnancy but just like with Bud, I’ve been crazy sick all day with this nugget too. Combine that with Sam traveling the entire month of February and I’m a bit spent! I really have been trying to stay positive and every time I get sick I just praise the Lord that there’s still something making me sick! But I think I’ve turned a corner! I’ve been able to get through an hour of the day without tossing my cookies and keep down meals which is amazing. I’m getting my energy back and am able to really exercise again. 15 weeks, I love you.

I went in for my genetic screening ultrasound and our little dude/dudette apparently was having a rave in there because he/she was going nuts. I just sat there and watched him/her kick off the wall of my uterus (too much?) all over the place. I started laughing and the ultrasound tech just looked at me and said, “I’ve been doing this 8 years and I’ve never seen a baby this hyper this early on. You’re going to have your hands full.”

…………………. awesome.

Here is a little glimpse of the belly that has finally popped out a bit this week now that I can eat something besides saltines and applesauce!

Clay Craft

Remember the clay craft I was telling you about for Valentine’s Day? Well here are the pictures from that fun day.

It was super easy and the kids loved it. This is Bud’s bestie Adalynn. She had a cold for a couple of weeks so he didn’t get to see her and it was hilarious because he would just walk around the house saying, “Addy? Addy?” Love struck people, love struck.

You make the dough in the pot, and its misleading because you think it’s going to smell like icing…. it doesn’t. Don’t eat it either….. not that I tried.

Bud really just liked the flattening part with the spatula.

The kids cut little heart shapes out with cookie cutters and then the mamas spent time actually making them look like hearts because they were inevitably torn apart.

My Bud.

And just so you don’t think I’m going to be one of those bloggers who only puts good pictures on here…

The finished product!

I hung them all from our chandelier and it was a very festive Valentine’s decoration. In fact, it added to my Sweetheart’s Supper that I made for Sam when he got home from traveling.

Monday Video

Last week my brother sent me this video that he had made of film he had collected over the year of visiting me and Bud and of Sam’s return. I can’t believe how much Bud grew from when Sam first left and when he returned. I mean, he left when Bud was 6 months and got home around 17 months so I shouldn’t be surprised but seeing the growth captured on film was crazy!

There aren’t many words for his talent, his gift, and his impact in my life in general but this video left me even more speechless.

Thank you for this special gift Graham, you’re the best little brodder ever.

Captivated

This morning Bud and I went to the children’s museum. We try and go once a week because it’s awesome and Bud loves it there. I love that each time we go Bud finds something new that sparks his attention. This morning, it was a turtle.

Yep. That sweet boy stood in front of the tiny aquarium in the corner and stared at the turtle forever. He kept pointing and yelling, “TUTTLE!” and then would get really quiet and just soak in every movement that turtle was doing. He was captivated.

At first I found myself wanting to move on to the next thing. I fought myself wanting to say “Lets look over here Bud!” or “I bet you’ll love this Bud!” but I resisted. I let my boy be captivated by something so simple for as long as he wanted. I plopped down on the floor next to him and just enjoyed the peace.

We live in such a hurried world and I so desperately don’t want to pass that down to my son. I even wrote a paper in grad school about some of the environmental causes of ADHD in children and one of the ones I kept coming back to was the parent’s tendency to move the children along to the next activity or the next toy or the next stimulus.

I’m re-reading 1000 Gifts by Ann Voskamp and leading a little discussion group at my house on Fridays. She references an Evelyn Underhill quote which I love, “On every level of life, from housework to heights of prayer, in all judgment and efforts to get things done, hurry and impatience are sure marks of the amateur.”

So, at least for this morning, I sat down next to my son who teaches me so much about life and I didn’t play the part of the rushed amateur. I was captivated right along side of him.

The Mighty River Project Giveaway

Happy Friday my friends. I mentioned a giveaway that I’m really excited about, so I’m here to deliver!

Have you heard about The Mighty River Project? Well if you haven’t, then you should go to their site PRONTO. They are doing amazing work. I don’t say that lightly. The Mighty River Project is an organization that empowers women in Uganda both with skills sets, missions, and child care. They employ and train the women in the area to make these beautiful baskets. With those skills, they are empowering the families financially which builds the entire community. TMRP also plans to provide childcare of the children of the women making baskets so that they aren’t left home with older siblings or by themselves. They will be on the same site as their mothers, safe, and in a healthy environment. And lastly, TMRP gets involved with orphan care in the region. They volunteer and provide financial assistance. It’s all pretty incredible the impact they are having there.

My sweet friend Erin Littleton and her husband started this organization after living in Uganda. They have a heart for Uganda and really believe that if they empower the parents to provide for their children, the numbers of orphans will drastically decrease. They plan on moving onto The Mighty River Project property with their three gorgeous children. Incredible right?

Ok so, Erin sent me a basket and necklace that one of the women on their property made. Yall- I was blown away.  It’s gorgeous. I immediately put it in the center of my dining room table and it hasn’t moved!

See what I mean!? Erin and The Mighty River Project have graciously offered to send a necklace and basket to one of my readers!

So leave a comment with your name and email and if you feel like it, what you are grateful for this Friday and I’ll randomly pick a winner at the end of the day on Tuesday. I’ll email the winner for their address and Erin will mail the package to you directly.

If you haven’t already, please hop over to TMRP’s website. It’s pretty awesome the work they are doing and if you feel led, give a donation! I know that I plan on doing so.

Have a great weekend!

Happy Love Day to you!

Happy Love day to you! Bud and I have been on a valentines crafting extravaganza this week in order to combat the gray weather.

First we made some awesome clay hearts with our friends Kim & Adalynn from this website. And then we made a bunch of valentines gifts for our storytime teacher, K & A, and our neighbors. I basically filled a bunch of mason jars with candy, cut hearts out of doilies, and tied a ribbon on those bad boys!

(This isn’t the one I made, I ganked it off the internets, but they looked close)

Then I got really bored and made a giant candy bouquet….. because I could.

In other news, I’m completely humbled by yalls sweet words about my last post. It was something brewing inside of me for awhile and thanks for letting me trust you with it. Your comments and emails have been smiled over, cried over, and soaked in. I plan on getting back to each and every one of you but please know how awesome I think you are. I’ve loved hearing your stories and I love how similar some of them are to the one I shared. Truly truly, I wish I could hug each of you.

*Stay tuned for a badass giveaway I have coming for Friday!*

Beautiful

This post has been stirring around in my head and heart for awhile now and I’ve sat down a million times to write it but I decided last night to just start writing and see what poured out of my fingers. I’m sorry if it’s long, but grab a beer because you’re about to get a glimpse into a very vulnerable side of me.

While Sam was deployed, I became very reminiscent of our relationship. The little things, the big things, and the things that set him apart. You see, when you’re worlds away from someone you love and you don’t have them to physically connect with, you have to sort through memories and heart-flutters in order to emotionally connect with them. While we have a very fun courtship story (one I’m sure I’ll share eventually), I couldn’t help but remember the main aspect of Sam that ruined all other men for me forever.  He was the first man to ever make me feel beautiful.

To give you a bit of a back story, I spent the prime years of age 18-21… how do I say this….. 25 pounds heavier. Now, when you’re 5’2” this shows. Every single pound shows. My value has never – hopefully will continue to never – be wrapped up in appearance but especially my weight. And while that is true, I think I made the mistake of thinking that I had zero value in the appearance department.

For high school, I went to a small prep school full of really gorgeous people. So my senior year, I felt like a leper. In college, I lived in a house with 9 breathtakingly beautiful women. Again, I felt like a complete outsider. I shared a room with a spunky girl named Ashley who was a freshman when she moved in with us. She had just had surgery so she had a roller backback because she couldn’t carry anything heavy. Yall- please imagine an overweight tomboy and a roller backpack carrying freshman trying to hold their own in a house full of older, gorgeous girls. It’s pretty much a miracle we aren’t going to die virgins.

But by Christmas break of that first year, Ashley of course had grown into her own knock-out self and I was still….. well, me. I felt like I had a choice. I was surrounded by beautiful people and instead of trying to seek beauty of my own, I made another identity for myself. I was blessed with incredible friends, great college memories, and a few relationships here and there but I always thought my role in those relationships was to be funny. So, I took on that as my identity. I would be the funny, non-threatening guy pal. Oh yes girlfriends, I was the girl that you couldn’t stand because my best friends were dudes and we kept you guessing on what our status was. (Let me put your minds at ease, they talked to me about their bathroom habits and punched me in the arms… and oh yeah, saw me as an asexual creature, so no worries on this end!) But, those left me with a lot of heartache because my heart held onto hope that I would somehow be seen as beautiful to these men, but sadly I was there because I could make them laugh and fulfill an emotional part of dating without their commitment.

Despite my feminist tendencies, there was a still a yearning in my heart to be called beautiful. Hell, I didn’t need to be called beautiful, I just wanted to feel like it. I suppressed that need until it was a faint whisper that I could easily ignore with a handful of SweetTarts and watching J.Lo’s “Enough”. (Isn’t that what college students do?)

Anyways, the summer after my junior year of college, all my roommates (except Ash) graduated and got married. I’m totally not joking. Seven graduated, five got married that following year, with the other two following shortly after. Everyone was moving on to their fairy tale and I was left to figure out mine. That summer was a huge growth time for me. I realized I was forcing the role of the “funny girl” on myself as a way to compensate for insecurity. I realized I had a really unhealthy attachment to food as a refuge. And I realized I was dealing with a shame that I really needed to be set free from. I didn’t care if I was going to be that size forever, I truly didn’t. But, I needed to get my heart right for my own sake. I was going to write my own damn fairy tale.

(Of course I made a lot of joke titles, “The Princess and the Circus Peanut” or “Sleeping Beauty… is still sleeping”)

My senior year I started off with a freedom and a confidence that I hadn’t experienced in a long time. I wasn’t searching for a man or a specific pant-size to be my value. I just wanted to figure out who I was outside of the identity I had roped myself into. And I did. Each day I learned more and more about myself and each day I became more and more free.

Then Sam came along. (Enter Sam, Stage Right-Inconvenient time of self-exploration) I kept hearing about this young buck with great hair so I asked someone to point him out to me.

“Where’s that Sam kid everyone is talking about?”
“Right there.”
“I’m sorry where? In the short shorts and boat shoes?”

Lets just say I wasn’t as captured by his charm as the others were. I mean don’t get me wrong, he was super hot. But too hot for me.

Well, he didn’t think so and was very, very forthcoming about his attraction to me. First of all, no one had EVER been forthcoming about their attraction to me. So naturally instead of embracing this like a normal human being, I decided to have a panic attack and run. What the hell was this guy thinking!? I’m older than he is, I’m not the cute sorority girl that I knew was his type, and I thought for sure that there was no way he could have meant what he said.

After months of trying to court me (hard), I decided to run even farther and go camping on a mountain by myself for a weekend. It poured down rain the entire time so I was forced inside a tent with my stupid thoughts. I’ve never been someone who could say that they have audibly heard from the Lord. He liked to speak to me more in haikus or smoke signals…. kidding. But for real, I heard Him that weekend. So graciously, so tenderly He said, “Stop being an idiot. You’ve been desiring for someone to make you feel beautiful. I’ve brought him to you. It’s real. Stop being afraid.”

Oh.

And here’s the thing, even on my dark days when I fall into the trap of my insecurities of feeling like that outsider, I remember that feeling. Please hear me, I DO NOT think we need men to make us feel beautiful. But, the way that I finally jumped into my fairy tale was by having my eyes opened to beauty by Sam. It was the first thing that made me fall in love with him. He knew my insecurities and loved me, embraced me, thought I was funny but also beautiful. I felt a balance when I met him.

I still feel balanced with him. Even if we’re about go to on our 5,000th date, I just came in from a run, or I’m dancing around in a costume doing a Steve Urkel impression, he looks at me with complete sincerity and makes me feel beautiful. I think it’s important that I had to come to that on my own, but I’m grateful Sam helped me there. Thanks for helping me see my fairy tale babe.

 Balance.
