Sweet Bud,
Yesterday was a crazy day in our state of North Carolina. We were voting on an amendment to the constitution concerning marriage. You came with me to vote. I was nervous. You see, I will not get into how I voted because honestly, I don’t care to. We got there and I was nervous that you would be exposed to people arguing, picketing, or just being snarky. Instead, everyone “ooed” and “ahhed” over you at the polls. But here’s the thing, the place of hostility was not at the polls. It was on this damn internet. (Mama can say damn because she is a grown up)
Bud, please don’t ever let me catch you being mean-spirited. That’s not how we act. We are not those people. God commands to love. He died for us to have breath so that we praise Him and to edify our brothers and sisters. Christ did not go through agony on the cross so that we could put others in agony here on earth. He did not get spit on so that we could spit venom at His children.
Seriously, no matter what people believe, even if you disagree… be kind. Be kind. Be kind.
Love always,
Your Mama
Here’s the thing yall- I believe there are Christians on both sides of this debate. It’s not my place to judge anyone for what they believe. But I got on Facebook and Twitter last night and was blown away. People are being down.right.MEAN. I was with my friend Kristin yesterday at her house and she shared her vote online. Yall- she put on a brave face but I could tell that people were saying hurtful things in response to her vote. While she and I may not agree on everything, I commend her for being honest with her vote and hell, she voted! That’s her right. She and I had a civil conversation in love and I wish I could say that others who disagreed with her would have done the same. She has been bullied, threatened, and disgraced. It’s a damn shame. Step away from the keyboards, quit being hateful, start respecting each other, and for God’s sake, show kindness to one another.
Love always,
Yo Mama
