Happy Easter!

Happy Easter from the Metzlers yall! Bud and I woke up to an amazing email from Sam just reminding us what Easter is all about, our risen Lord. Sam pointed out how amazing it is that the tomb was empty and how incredible it must have been for his followers to have everything Christ had been saying finally make sense!

It was one of those weekends that flew by but I’m not quite sure why! We spent some time with family at the farm, visited the Easter Bunny (fail), took pictures outside, Bud opened his first easter basket, and went to church.

I hope you had an amazing weekend. We got to Skype with Sam today which always makes my soul sing. It was the first Easter in 7 years that I haven’t gotten to hunt down my hidden Easter basket from him. He started hiding easter baskets for me when we were dating and it became our tradition. I hope this is the last Easter we have to spend apart!

Bud's first Easter Basket! And an Easter present to me from my parents!

Off to Church!

in our Sunday best

look at these beautiful.... squirrel!

are these edible?

and after this i died of cute overload

my bunny

come home soon dada. when you leave, things like this happen

look at my little stud. bunny ears to match his bunny teeth

Are you ready for this next one? Are you sure? You might want to sit down…

As you can see, the easter bunny visit was a fail. and CPS was called because this poor child's mother was too busy laughing and taking pictures while he cried his eyes out. i can't wait to see how Santa goes....

6 Month Photo Shoot

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, Kristin Boone is amazing. She did my maternity pictures and she took pictures of our little family while we were home for Christmas before Sam left. If you are in the Winston-Salem area, you should use her! She’s so fun and makes you feel so comfortable, even Sam who would rather have his eyes gouged out by a pigeon than have his picture taken.

I treasure these pictures so much and look at them every morning. It makes time stand still a bit for me and makes me yearn for our family to be back together again. Is it December yet? The ones of my man and my boy… oh my gosh, be still my heart!

Hope you have an amazing Easter weekend.

Reasons I will never be cool

1.   I try to be stylish, I really do. But I’m just not. I wear my cowboy boots and dresses to avoid muffin tops throughout the entire year. Pants are overrated.

2. Well, then there’s this.

3. I sing most of my sentences and only use my real voice about 30% of the time. My poor son will never know what my real voice sounds like. Is she british today? kermit the frog? dumb redneck? (surprisingly not my real voice… or is it?)  valley girl? does my mom have a lisp?

4. I do things like dress up to pick my brother up from the airport and yell “HE’S HOME FROM THE CITY!! MY BROTHER IS HOME FROM THE CITY!!”

5. I don’t do Twilight. I would have loved it when I was 16 I’m sure. But you know what? The bags under my eyes and that weird lump under my ass that’s not quite my thigh (WHAT IS THAT?!?!) remind me that I’m not 16.

6. Much in the same category, I don’t get Hunger Games. Here is how a conversation went the other day:

Friend: Oh my gosh, I was up until 4am last night reading Hunger Games.
Me: Man I keep hearing about this. Is it good?
Friend: It’s amazing.
Me: What is it about?
Friend: Oh my gosh it’s so good. It’s about these teenagers who have to fight to the death to show the strongest survive. So they try and kill each other in these big competitions.
Me: **** silence **** crickets chirping***
Friend: I know it sounds weird but its SO well written.
Me:  (After a bunch of incoherent sounds), so, its about teens killing each other? That DOES sound amazing, in a crazytown kind of way. Does it have vampires?
Friend: No. It should.
Me: I’m breaking up with you. It’s not me, it’s you.

So in summary, I’ve accepted that I’m not cool and shall embarrass my kids by doing Chinese Firedrills around the car at stoplights, dancing in the grocery store, and shouting gibberish in the middle of crowds. Come to think of it, my dad did every.single.one of those things and I turned out…… well, I just turned out.

Steppin’ Out

Thanks to all yall who commented on my Grandma. We are totally humbled by everyone’s love over her and our family. She was definitely loved. We had a reception for her on Wednesday night (think Irish wake style) and over 350 people came… no joke. It was incredible. I hope I leave a legacy of love like that.

This weekend was nice just recuperating from the week’s events with family. I spent some time at the farm with my family and Grandpa, went on some nature walks with Bud, went out with some girlfriends Friday night, and Sunday night spent some time on the back porch of the river house having “cocktail hour” with 6 friends, 2 kiddos and 6 dogs. It was wonderful.

Hope yall had a great weekend! Here is a snapshot of my outfit from the weekend, I’m linking up to my friend Mandy’s page, Steppin’ Out Saturday.

Jeans: Cheap Monday ** Bought at Centennial Trading Company. If you are in Winston Salem, definitely check this store out, they are friends of mine and buy all domestically made stuff!
Shoes: Wanted Shoes
Vest: Francescas

8 Months

Well Bud, you are a week shy of 9 months and I am just now posting your 8 month post! Blurgh. Oh well, such is life.

You are about 18 pounds and are 27.5 inches long! You have gotten your length from your daddy… hallelujah! I know I say this every month but you keep getting more and more fun. This 8th month has been so much fun. You love to giggle when I tickle your chunky thighs, blow raspberries on your belly and neck, tickle your toes, and play “corn on the cob” when I turn you sideways and pretend I’m eating you like you guessed it…. a corn on the cob. You think that’s hilarious.

You have these piercing blue eyes that everyone comments on. I’m sure they are going to knock some girls on their heels but you shall remain gentlemanly and pure or else I will lock you in your room and make you watch Steel Magnolias on repeat. Do they make chastity belts for boys?  The thought of you as a teenager makes my blood pressure go up. You have your 4 teeth, two top and two bottom. They are precious and you give the best smiles. You are still rocking some strawberry blonde hair like your mama, I hope it stays that way!

You have still been sitting like a champ and haven’t shown any interest in crawling or walking until today! Yes today, you were a wiggle worm on the floor! Every time you sat down, you’d push off with your legs and just sprawl out on your tummy. Once you figure out how to catch yourself and push up with your arms you will be my little mobile boy. I love how curious you are. Anything that is in arms reach, you want it PRONTO! And it normally ends up in your mouth.

You have officially discovered your voice. You squeal and squeal and squeal! It cracks up everyone in the room. It always happens when you get excited, especially when you see your Dada on the computer screen or your doggie Roy.  It honestly sounds like someone is blowing a whistle! Your Great Grandpa Bennett thought it was a whistle the first time you did it and he thinks its the funniest thing he’s ever heard. He always tries to get you to do it when he’s with you.

You are still eating like a champ and love your fruits and veggies. Sadly you are becoming less and less interested in nursing, but we’re going to keep it going until you’re 1 year old. I’ve been putting some pumped mlk in a sippy cup and you’ve been drinking that so well. I should have tried that earlier! Half of me can’t wait to have my body back and some freedom since you’re still on the bottle boycott but the other half of me will miss those times when I’m nursing you and its just you and me in a quiet room. I treasure those times so much.

I love you like crazy little boy and you bring me so much joy that it is genuinely hard to catch my breath sometimes.

Grandma B

Yesterday my sweet and spunky Grandma Bennett passed away. I could say a million things about her and have already told you about her awhile ago in this post. I’ll be spending some time with family the next couple of days remembering her fondly and laughing about all she had to put up with. You will be missed greatly Grandma but thank you for showing me that a woman can be southern and gentle, polite but tactful, and full of moxy all at once.

Here is her obituary that my uncle wrote and I think it memorializes her pretty dang well.

         Lillian Joyner ‘Joy’ Bennett

Winston Salem – Lillian Joyner “Joy” Bennett, born September 9, 1923 passed away in her Pfafftown, North Carolina home on March 25, 2012

Joy was the eldest daughter of Edward Graham Flanagan and Lillian Joyner Flanagan of Greenville, NC; she has a brother Graham Flanagan Jr. of Fort Myers, Florida and sisters Terry Flanagan Wolverton of Raleigh, NC and Patsy Flanagan Wilkerson (deceased) and the wife of Bert Lester Bennett Jr.

Upon graduating from Greenville’s Rose High School, Salem College, and East Carolina University, Joy left for New York City to begin her career as a stewardess for Pan American Airlines where she worked on the “clippers” flying between New York, London, France, Prague and South Africa. After her years in New York City, Joy was ‘encouraged’ by her parents and close friends to return home to pursue a courtship with Bert Lester Bennett Jr. , whom had begun work in Greenville with Quality Oil Company. Joy and Bert were married on April 29, 1949, beginning a devoted partnership lasting 63 wonderful years with their bond being broken only by her passing.

After moving to Winston Salem, NC, Joy took on the primary role that in many ways defined whom she was. Joy gave birth to eight children (four boys, four girls) beginning with her first son Bert III on February 5, 1951 then continuing with Graham, Joy, John, Louise, Terry, Ann and finally Jimmy on December 18, 1964. Because Joy was a mother whom frequently fostered her children’s independence, delivering eight children proved the easiest part of motherhood. Where managing eight “self-determined” teenagers might prove the downfall for most, Joy remained steady at her helm, rarely faltering and never giving up. Her reservoir of energy proved infinite, continually called on by endless school trips, afternoon sports events, doctors appointments and numerous emergency room visits. As the mother of so many strong-willed children there will be few who will ever match Joy for her constant patience, unconditional love, and adventurous spirit. Even after her longest days she always reserved time for tickling her children’s sixteen little feet. On the day that she passed Joy had successfully nurtured her eight children through a combined 418 years of life.

Joy’s most lasting legacy will be the large family she leaves behind to carry on her love for life. Her legacies include seven living children (daughter Joy preceded her in death) her children’s six spouses; Beth Bennett Townsend, Janice Bowman Bennett, Jeanne Raibaldi Bennett, Steve Allen, Wesley Phillips and Marianne Grindon Bennett. The legacy continues with her seventeen grandchildren and their spouses; Bert “Cort” and Lindsey Bennett, Taylor Bennett, Hunter and Mary Bennett, Spencer Bennett, Steve and Lynh Bennett, Martha and Sam Metlzer, Graham and Nomi Pritz-Bennett, Lilly Bennett, Johnny Bennett, Jacob Vares, Justice Vares, Luke Vares, Conner Bennett, Parker Bennett, Claire Bennett, Meg Bennett, James Bennett and finally Joy’s first great-grandchild, Sam “Bud” Metzler. For reasons of brevity not recognized are the hundreds of “pets” that spent time in Joy’s care, including innumerable dogs, cats, horses, occasional pigs, goats, and an array of other barnyard guests.

Even though kept busy raising her many children, Joy proved herself skilled in many arenas outside the household. She was proficient at horseback riding, golf, skeet shooting, tennis and riding the oceans waves with her kids. Joy was an avid and experienced bridge player having regular games with friends. She always enjoyed continual learning and after raising her children became certified to teach the “Great Books” at Summit School. In her “spare time” Joy served on and led numerous community organizations including The Junior League, Democratic Women, The Garden Club, The Book Club, SECCA, The Winston Salem Little Theater and more. Though a product of the “old school” reflected most in her never-ending attention to correct manners and proper diction, Joy always remained unconventional in her spirit. From youth through her final years she constantly challenged all around her to imaginative thought, bringing many smiles and laughs to those in her company.

Where she enjoyed so many of life’s offerings, Joy certainly would put traveling with her daughter and daughters-in-law among the things she loved most. From the time they were young adults Joy arranged for her four daughters (later to include daughters-in-law), to accompany her on many wonderful trips to destinations near and far. These “girls trips” were just one of Joy’s ways of giving, sharing and keeping her daughters close.

Lillian Joyner “Joy” Bennett lived her 88 years of life completely. She gave so much to so many, creating a foundation of love and respect for her family to continue to give. She will be remembered often and to many as a very special friend, to her husband as a forever loving and adoring companion and to her many children as just the best mother ever!

The family will host a reception to honor the life of Lillian Flanagan “Joy” Bennett on Wednesday evening, 5PM at Old Town Country Club, Winston Salem with a memorial tribute to follow. In lieu of flowers gifts may be made to Hospice & Palliative Care Center, 101 Hospice Lane, Winston-Salem, NC 27103

Half-Bloomed

You know how when Spring comes and everyone posts poems and pictures about new life? Well, this aint one of them.

I was on a run the other day through the neighborhood and noticed the trees were so gorgeous. I’m talking breathtaking. They were fully bloomed, living as they should: full of color, body, and life. I took it all in and admired it.

Then I passed another tree that hadn’t quite bloomed yet. It was still living, breathing, and a part of Spring. But, it wasn’t fully thriving. It stopped me in my tracks. I took a deep breath because I felt exactly like the tree.

Don’t lose hope on me, I have a point and its not completely depressing. You see, when my Sam is around, I feel completely bloomed. I feel full of color, body, and life. He makes me feel like its Spring every day.

Since he’s been gone, I feel like I’m not quite blooming yet. I’m still joyful, I still have a purpose, and I’m still a part of Spring… but I just haven’t quite burst full of life yet.

When his plane lands and he walks into that hanger, and I run towards that man…. every single fiber of my being will burst into color.  fully living. fully bloomed.

Steppin’ Out

On Saturday I went to a place called “Merlot and Van Gogh” in downtown Winston for my friend Liz’s birthday.  It was so fun! They rented the place out and you bring your own drinks and food while an art instructor is there to help you paint a fun painting while they supply the materials and space. It was a really fun night. I definitely will go there again… maybe my 30th birthday?

Here are some shots of the crew. A night full of painting, pizza, and wine… yes please!!

Why yes, I am laughing at my own painting. This is also when I yelled at Ashley for having a better painting than me.

the ladies!
