Foobie-Doo Questions

So, a couple questions for you mamas out there.

1. I know I’m supposed to only introduce one new food at a time for a few days in case of allergies, so if I introduce some avocado today at lunch, do I just keep on with the oatmeal for the other meals?

If you feed them some solids 3x a day (after nursing), do you do different foods each time or the same? If I make a lot of avocado or sweet potato baby food, do I give him avocado for one meal, sweet potato for the other and oatmeal for the third?

SO MANY DUMB QUESTIONS!!!!!!! I asked Roy but he was useless.

MO-Meal

We all know Bud did NOT like rice cereal. But homeboy LOVES LOVES his oatmeal. I still breastfeed just every 3 hours… yall for real the boy can eat. I started offering some oatmeal, (just about a tablespoon) after supper one night and he LOVED it! I mix it with some of my breastmilk. So over the next couple of weeks I increased volume and then added it 3 times a day. I wanted him to get used to eating breakfast, lunch, and supper with the family. He sits at the table on my lap or in his bumbo like a big boy and just downs some oatmeal. But since he can’t walk, I like to pretend I know what he’s saying which inevitably means me making up baby language. So now after I nurse him, I say “want some mo-meal?” and he says, “Mama, you’re an imbecile. It’s oatmeal and I would happily oblige to partake in some steel oats of the warm variety.”

Think he’s happy?

They didn’t tell me…

1. That there are few things cuter than a baby in a hat.

2. I would eventually figure out how to pose with a baby.

3. I would turn into a crazy person about Bud being behind on milestones. Homeboy is fighting me big time on sitting up. He just hilariously folds forward like human origami. And he gives me the stanky leg dance everytime I try and have him stand. God help me to not become like the moms on Toddlers and Tiaras.

4. I will make any face or sound no matter how ridiculous to get a smile from my son.

5. My shirts don’t need washing until Bud has spit up on it at least 5 times. Anything less than 5 means my shirt is “clean enough”.

6. Having Bud in the mix brings a new level of family that I’ve never experienced before. Now, there is nothing more I’d rather do than spend my days with my 2 guys at home… and Roy I guess.

7. It doesn’t matter if my hair is falling out in clumps, my jeans fit a little tighter, or I feel like I could puke after trying to run 3 miles when I used to be able to run 8 without skipping a beat. I stare at my sweet family and my cup overflows. Joy like this is truly overwhelming.

Hope

I mentioned the other day that I’ve been in a bit of a funk. Bud is an awesome napper so while I get a lot of stuff done around the house… I also have a lot of time to think. There are a lot of things I don’t understand. One being, lavender cupcakes. Please don’t tell me, “Oooh you just have to try them!” You know what? I did try one. And it was like I was tonguing Crabtree & Evelyn.

And two, why people have to suffer through tragedy.

One thing about the internets is that I find my naive and ungrateful eyes being pried open and weeping over other families’ stories. Like the Fitzgeralds. Or this family. Or this one. I’m talking ugly, loud weeping over these families having to suffer. I end up wanting to wake Bud up from his nap and just snuggle on the couch and praise God that He has allowed us to have Bud, even if its just for a little while.

These stories are happening all around me. A college friend Settle went to wake her sweet boy Webb up in the morning only to find he had gone to be with Jesus. I cannot imagine that heartache. I don’t know if I would survive it.  But she has. And she is fighting for her family to remember the joy he brought to their lives.

Two nights ago I stood in our living room and hugged two close friends who had become like family out here with tears in our eyes. He was leaving in a couple of hours to a war zone. He will be gone for a year and in 5-6 months she will be bringing their first baby into the world. I sat on the couch with her the next day and cried with her because I knew there was nothing I could say to make her feel better and I didn’t understand her longing, her worry, or her pain.

Daily I think about all of the families that will be spending Christmas in a hospital instead of by a Christmas tree. Daily I think about my old clients in North Carolina and pray they will find a warm place to lay their head and some food to eat.

I find myself clinging to my Father for answers and on my knees yelling, “What do I do with all of this?!” I have never been one to just flip open the Bible and hope that whatever I turned to would somehow unfold all of the burning questions I have. But I was at a loss yesterday morning. I prayed a simple, “help.” and flipped open John 9. It’s about Jesus healing the man born blind. The disciples asked him who had sinned to cause this man to be born blind. Essentially, the disciples were asking the same question I’ve been asking, “why does he have to suffer? why.” And Jesus answered,

“Neither this man nor his parents sinned. But this happened so that the work of God might be displayed in his life. As long as it is day, we must do the work of Him who sent me.”

I cannot spend my time focusing on the hurt, the pain, and the tragedy. Where is the hope in that? I have to spend my time focusing on the glory that can be brought to our Father through these stories. I have to hope that His love and his kindness will be revealed through these stories. I have to pray that the God of Justice that I worship will be revealed. I have to hope that one day I have an ounce of bravery that these families have. I also have to hope that we all have a role in these stories, doing His work. These families don’t need my pity. Shame on me. These families need my prayer. They need us to fight alongside of them. They probably need me to stop bitching about stupid things like losing the last 7 pregnancy pounds and being far away from family.

I don’t think God wants us to sit in the mud for too long. He wants us to realize there is work to do and no matter how dark things may seem, He wants us to hope He’ll bring the light.

Home brew anyone?

Remember when I told you that we’re going to try and find some new hobbies that we never had time to do before? No?

Well, I thought I did. Anyways, Sam has decided to try home brewing his own beer! It’s a win/win situation. It can be done at home… win. I get to drink it and be his judge… win.

So now during the day I like to go and check on the brewing situation instead of watching Alvin and the Chipmunks movie preview for the 100th time on the television.

the materials

getting the brew ready

Roy wanted to help….. drunkard.

stirring and stirring and stirring my brewwwww

Yall have any new hobbies I should try from home? If you say Exercise TV I’m going to ninja kick you in your right ear. (Because that’s the only leg I can kick higher than my hip without falling over).

O Christmas Tree, O Christmas Tree

This weekend we got Bud’s FIRST Christmas Tree. We went to an awesome farm, Schilter’s Farm. They had a nativity scene, animals like PONIES (which I screamed over and over), and you cut your own tree!! It was really fun. We walked around and found the one we wanted, my handsome hottie sawed that mother down, and carried it with his muscle-y arms back to our car. SO FUN! We told Bud all about the nativity scene and let him look at the animals.

I’ve been in a bit of a funk lately and I’m trying to cling to the things that are good and true in my life. Things like family days, Sam having a job that enables me to stay at home with Bud, the most heart-melting gummy smiles from my offspring, and Grace that enables me to stand when I should be falling on my face every day.

I pray you live in that Grace today. We don’t deserve it, but God knows we have it.

Mama Moments of WHHAAA???

I have had a few moments of “WHAT THE HELL!??!” as a mama. It started when I was a preggo and its continued now that I have proof I was carrying a child all those months. Sometimes I feel like I could write a book on the crazy things that people say to me… you know, one of those books that your mom puts in the guest room bathroom. So I decided to share a few that came to mind. On my honor, all of these things happened. I’m really glad they did because I’m half way done with my bathroom book.

1. I was talking to the pediatrician at Bud’s 4 month check up and asked her a reasonable medical question and she pulled out her trendy iPhone with an even trendier cover and replied, “Hold on, let me Google it.”
WHHAAA??!?!!?! Are you serious lady doc? First off, if you don’t know the answer, I’d rather you leave the room to search Google and then come back and falsely convince me that you are confidently diagnosing my child. I know doctors are not fortune tellers and are just human but humans can pretend to know everything and I like those humans.  And secondly, Web MD already told me Bud had herpes and dysentery so…

2. I was trying to figure out if I could wash Bud’s bottles in the dishwasher so I googled it (don’t hate the player, hate the game) and I found a forum and the number 1 was response was, “YES! I have seen my cousin do it all the time.”
WHHHAAA?!?!?! Really? Couldn’t find a better answer Yahoo Answers? Is your cousin also a mom on Toddlers and Tiaras? Or perhaps one of those moms who thinks its ok to leave their child in a hot Toyota? Or one of those moms that thinks switching to “solids” means shoving Funions in your baby’s mouth? If so, please give me your cousin’s number, I need a babysitter for Friday night.

3. When I was 9 months pregnant and wandering around Olympia trying to keep myself busy, I stumbled into a thrift store. It was one of those that you are afraid you might leave needing a Tetanus shot. The shop owner (I liked to call her the ShopKeeper) started asking me all of these baby questions. We started talking about birth, blah blah blah. Then I shit you not (you’ll realize the comedy in my words, don’t be mad I cursed Mom), she said, “Well I almost died during labor with my first baby because she had shit inside of me. Poop everywhere inside of my womb.”
WHHHAAA?!?! I don’t really need to unpack the ridiculous-ness of this one do I? I do? Ok fine. DON’T TELL ME HORROR STORIES DAYS BEFORE I AM ABOUT TO PUSH A GIANT-HEADED METZLER OUT OF MY LADY GARDEN!!!! But to her credit, that’s the grossest poop story I’ve ever heard.

4. Right before Bud was born I went to a support group for breastfeeding mothers. Sam was still across the country in training and I was by myself in Washington. I was pretty desperate for friends at this point and wanted to learn sooo I ended up in a musty church listening to women bitch and moan about their husbands (note to friends: don’t bitch about your husband to a hormonal woman who would give anything to have her husband near her). Anyways, one of the ladies told me that the key to breastfeeding was co-sleeping. I don’t have beef with co-sleeping, I have plenty of friends who do it. We choose to keep Bud in his crib and our bed is for grown-ups only… preferably just me and Sam. But I was getting a little bored at the meeting so I decided to instigate so I curiously and idiotically asked, “So, how do you keep your marriage spiced up with you know… bow chicka bow-wow?” (True story, I’ve never made those sounds in my life but felt the need to in this situation). And the lady said, “Oh, we do it while the baby is in bed with us.”
WHHAA?!?! More power to ya but that’s never gonna happen in the Metzler bed. We can’t even do it when we think Roy the dog is looking at us! We’re afraid he’s judging us. Also, Bud wakes up to anything moving outside of his nursery door, so not to be inappropriate here (who me??) but how is making whoopy next to him supposed to keep him asleep?!? No thanks.

Have yall had any “WHHAA!?!?!” moments that will make me laugh? I know you never comment (ahem) but I think you should share some good stories with me… I know you have them!

Last year of my 20s hollerrr!!!!!

My fam was here for my 29th birthday on Friday and it was a low key day. Birthdays with a baby= totally not a birthday rager. It was a hilarious and very quick lesson that birthdays from now on will be a bit different.  You see, I go ALL OUT for birthdays. For my brother I have thrown a bowling party where I made 50 t-shirts with his face on it, I ordered sumo wrestling suits and had a party with all his friends while we had a wrestling party out front of his apartment with root beer kegs. My best buds and I may or may not have made him an inappropriate pinata filled with swiss rolls and white castle burgers (his favs).  I have thrown a surprise birthday party for my hubbs (only to find out he doesn’t so much love big parties) and kidnapped him to take him on a mountain fishing trip with some of his best friends John and Turner. I used to make up dances for my mom and dress up as a waitress and serve a fancy dinner to my dad. I’ve done this since I can remember. I love big birthday parties. I cannot WAIT for Bud’s birthdays. They are going to be HUGE!! HUGE I TELL YOU!! All of our birthdays were a really big deal growing up thanks to my mama. She knew how to throw a party.

So having my family out here in WA for my birthday was awesome. We went on a hike that morning to the sound. Then I hung out with my Bud all day getting him to nap and getting in tons of playtime on the floor while everyone ran errands. Then we went out to supper to Jake’s while Bud had a little fuss-fest because he was up past his bedtime. When we got back to the house they had gotten me a delicious ice cream cake, tons of candy, and really sweet gifts. Yay birthdays!

LETS DO THIS!

she can turn the world on with her smillleeeeee

family walkin' it out

mom loves graffiti... and ear muffs

happy birthday to meeee

my ice cream clown.... and creeper dad

leave me be roy the dog... never gonna happen

yay mom

Sam got me the sweet gift. He found a designer on Etsy to make a locket with the saying, “I love you to the moon and back” because that’s what I say to Bud every night. 10 points for my beau.

Here is my promise- I’m going to live up my last year as a 20-something even though my brother kept saying, “HAPPY 30TH!! We’re rounding up…” I’ll round up my foot across your face Graham.
